Are Antler Dog Chews Safe?

But wait, you may wonder, are antler dog chews safe? It’s a valid concern, especially when it comes to our beloved fur babies. Rest assured, we have your pup’s safety at heart. Like any responsible dog owner, you should always exercise caution and supervise your dog during playtime, particularly when introducing a new chew. It’s all about striking that balance between enjoyment and safety, ensuring that your furry friend stays out of harm’s way.

Yes, Antler dog chews are typically safe for dogs, however, there are some important things to know.

  • Size: Smaller pieces can break off causing bowel obstructions if swallowed
  • Aggressive Chewers: If your dog bites down on it too hard, the antler can cause the dog to break a tooth. These chews may not be suitable for dogs that bite down really hard on their toys. They have worked amazing for my two German Shepherds.
  • Safety: As silly as it sounds, if your dog runs with these in their mouth you can get poked in the leg with them pretty hard, trust me when i say it does not feel good to get whacked in the leg with an antler.
  • Quality: It is essential to buy high-quality antlers, older antlers have a tendency to have cracks which can splinter causing issues in the mouth and or GI tract for your dog.

Are whole antlers Dog Chews Good For Dogs?

Whole antlers can indeed be good dog chews for many dogs. They offer a variety of benefits that make them a popular choice among dog owners.

First and foremost, whole antlers are highly durable and long-lasting. They are natural, dense, and solid, which makes them suitable for dogs with strong chewing instincts and aggressive chewers. Unlike some other chew toys that may get destroyed quickly, antlers can withstand extended periods of chewing, providing hours of entertainment for your furry friend.

Moreover, antlers for dogs to chew are a natural source of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which can contribute to your dog’s overall dental health. The act of chewing on antlers can help scrape off plaque and tartar buildup from their teeth, promoting cleaner and healthier gums. This chewing action also stimulates saliva production, which aids in maintaining good oral hygiene.

Additionally, antlers are typically free from artificial additives, preservatives, and chemicals, making them a safer alternative to certain synthetic chews. When sourced from reputable suppliers and properly processed, antlers are less likely to pose a choking hazard or cause digestive issues compared to some other chew toys on the market.

Different types of antlers for dogs

Antlers are popular chew toys for dogs due to their durability and natural appeal. They provide mental stimulation and help satisfy a dog’s natural chewing instincts. When it comes to antlers, there are various types available, each with its own unique characteristics. Along with various types by species, there are also various cuts available. Here are some different types of antlers commonly used for dogs:

Deer Antlers

Deer antlers are one of the most common types of antlers used as chew toys for dogs. They are sourced from deer, such as whitetail or mule deer. Deer antlers are typically dense, durable, and long-lasting. They come in different sizes, including whole antlers or sections cut into various shapes. The larger ones can last about 2 months with my dog Clove. She is a female German Shepherd that is currently just over 1 year old.

Elk Antlers

elk antlers are also a good option for dog chews. Elk antler laying on the side of a hill, with rolling hills in the background.

Elk antlers are larger and denser compared to deer antlers, making them suitable for medium to large dogs who are strong chewers. Elk antlers are known for their durability and are a popular choice for aggressive chewers. They offer a challenging chewing experience and can provide hours of entertainment.

Moose Antlers

moose antlers are more rare and much larger

Moose Antlers are the largest and heaviest type of antlers available for dogs. They are highly durable and ideal for large and powerful chewers. Moose antlers provide an excellent chewing experience and can withstand even the most vigorous chewing sessions. They are a great choice for dogs who need a long-lasting chew toy.

Split Antlers

Split Antlers: Split antlers are antlers that have been cut lengthwise to expose the marrow inside. The marrow is often more appealing to dogs and can provide an added incentive for chewing. Split antlers are a good option for dogs who are new to antler chews or have a less aggressive chewing style. They can be easier to chew and may help entice dogs to start chewing on antlers.

Burr Antlers

Burr Antlers: are antlers that still have the bony base attached. They contain more marrow and tissue, making them softer and more palatable for dogs. Burr antlers are a great choice for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with dental issues. They offer a gentler chewing experience while still providing the benefits of antler chews.

When selecting an antler for your dog, it’s important to consider your dog’s size, chewing habits, and preferences. Choose an antler that matches your dog’s chewing strength to ensure it provides a safe and enjoyable chewing experience. Always supervise your dog while chewing on antlers and monitor the condition of the antler to prevent any potential hazards, such as small pieces breaking off.

Personal Experience with Antler Dog Chews

I will start out by saying that Clove loves the antler chews. She can often be found laying on her cot with an antler chew either in her mouth or close by. We have tried both Elk and Deer antlers, but have not yet tried the moose antlers.

Most of the elk antlers I was able to source locally are the split version. I would have to say I was a little disappointed at how long those lasted. While they were big, they had the softer middle exposed and she chewed right through it. I think they only last about a week for a 6 inch piece.

The whole deer antlers are the ones that we currently buy. They can last a solid two months if you get the ones that are about 1 foot long. Once they get below about 4 inches we do take them away and toss them out in the woods. The smaller ones do pose a choking hazard on larger breed dogs.

Do veterinarians recommend antlers?

Many veterinarians do recommend antlers for dogs as a natural and durable chew toy option. Veterinarians who express concerns about antler dog chews may highlight potential risks associated with their usage. These concerns primarily revolve around the hardness of antlers, which could potentially lead to dental fractures or other oral injuries, particularly in dogs with pre-existing dental issues or those prone to aggressive chewing.

Additionally, it’s important to supervise your dog when giving them any chew toys, including antlers, to prevent any potential choking or injury. It’s always best to consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog any new chew toy or treat to ensure that it’s safe and appropriate for your dog’s individual needs and health status.

How long should you let your dog chew on an antler?

First and foremost, it’s essential to supervise your dog during their antler chewing sessions. This allows you to closely monitor their behavior and step in if any issues arise. Remember, even the most durable chews can pose a risk if a dog chews too aggressively or if the antler becomes worn down to small or sharp pieces.
As a general rule of thumb, it’s recommended to limit chewing sessions to 15-30 minutes at a time. This helps prevent excessive wear and tear on your dog’s teeth and reduces the risk of potential oral injuries. After each session, it’s a good idea to remove the antler and inspect it for any signs of significant wear or damage.
